Steve Grant joined The Courant in 1980. He is a staff writer who writes frequently about natural science topics. Previously, he was a reporter with the Journal Inquirer in Manchester, Conn., where he covered political and environmental issues. At The Courant, Steve was the paper's environment writer from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 through 1986, he was The Courant's state capitol bureau chief, covering the governor and the legislature in addition to supervising the bureau staff. He was the Courant's politics and government editor from 1986 through 1987, when he returned to writing. Each year, Steve embarks upon an extended outdoor project, writing about his experiences as he goes. He has canoed the entire Connecticut River, traveled the New England shoreline from Canada to New York, walked the 360-mile route of the legendary Leatherman and hiked hundreds of miles of the Appalachian Trail. Steve's writing has been commended by numerous public, private and professional organizations, both regional and national, including Sigma Delta Chi, the society of professional journalists, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Nature Conservancy. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Steve holds a bachelor of arts degree in English. He is a native of Waterbury, Conn., and currently resides in Newtown with his wife, Susan, his daughter, Allison, and his son, Scott.
